I can remember it like was yesterday. "Hey fat boy." Lard ass. Tubby. All names that hit like a ton of bricks when you are a young boy or girl. Names like these drive a child to tears or something even worse. Helping your child lose weight is not hard but the parents need to lead by example because a child will adopt the habits that their family abides by.
It is much easier than ever before for a child to become overweight. High calorie foods are abundant, cheap, and targeted right at our children. Exercise seems to be a thing of the past as well. It is not unusual for a child to spend hours in front of the computer or television. 60% of children don't even get the recommended one hour of physical activity per day.
You are probably asking yourself by now," How can I help my child lose weight"? First of all, you need to instill in them a lifestyle change, or quite simply a change of habits. You will help them to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Changes to their eating habits will need to take place. Lastly you need to encourage them to take part in a moderately physical activity for at least an hour every day. If not more...
Healthy Diet
-Starchy Foods such as bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta, should provide at least half of the energy in a child's diet
-Encourage fresh fruit, vegetables, and crackers, instead of chocolate, cookies, and chips
-Grill or bake your foods instead of frying
-Avoid soda pop completely. They are full of empty calories and will pack the weight on your child
-Always make sure they have a good breakfast. Stay away from all of the high sugar cereals
Eating Habits
-Always set the example. Change your eating habits to reflect what you want your children to do.
-Get your children involved in the preparation of the food. Not only will this teach them a valuable skill but it will make them more aware of what they are eating
-Don't keep lots of high sugar, high fat junk foods in the house
Physical Activity
-Encourage your child to take part in activities outside the home
-Lead by example. Walk when you can. Take them on bike rides or out to parks to throw the ball around
-restrict their video game/television/computer usage to an hour every day. This will make them get out of the house and into a physical activity of some sort.
Childhood Obesity and the problems associated with it are on the rise. If you see that your child is overweight, do your part to helping your child lose weight by implementing some of the strategies that I have given you here. And one day we can put an end to childhood obesity.
